On The Road Again Odie Style

Schedule Note: Sunday-Tuesday, October 3-5, we are preaching the Fall Fellowship meeting for the Choc-Wa Fellowship. It was supposed to be at Midway Assembly near St. Stephens, Alabambabut had to be moved to Copeland Assembly due to a funeral. The church is located at 468 Copeland Buckatunna Rd, Millry, AL. Service begins Sunday at 6:00 and Monday and Tuesday at 7:00.

We have never parked at Copeland. We do not know anything about internet connectivity there. If you do not hear from us Monday and Tuesday, you will know why.

Hey Friends,

This is Odie checking in with you today. How are you doing? Things are going well for us! I am so thrilled to be back on the road. We have always traveled. I grew up being on the go. We have been blessed with a wonderful life. It really has been an amazing journey.

A large part of my childhood was spent in a car. I learned how to entertain myself during long car rides. I still love to sleep while we are traveling. I have tried many different ways to get comfortable.

Dad realized one day that I eat my burger before my fries. When he asked me why, I told him I learned to eat in the car. I had to hold my drink in one hand and eat with the other hand. It is easier to save my fries until the end. I still eat one item at a time. All the time spent in the car has impacted me forever.

Now I will tell you about a few of the things that helped me on travel days. Here are just a few of my favorite things to occupy me on a road trip. What did you like to pack for your trips?

Pens, paper and crayons were a must for my travel bag. I spent hours coloring or drawing. I would often pass notes up to Mom. In most of the notes, I was asking her for another snack or drink. Food is always on the mind of Odie Boggs. I am still concerned about my snacks and drinks!

I remember playing a lot with my baby dolls and barbies in the car. Books were also a great way to pass the time. Dad shared his love of reading with me. I loved it when he would buy me a new book. Some of my favorites from my childhood were Clifford The Big Red Dog, Garfield and Odie, Where's Waldo and The Berenstain Bears.

We played many travel games over the years like finding the mile marker signs first, looking for certain words on the signs, counting the cows on your side of the road and our favorite game, word association. We still play word association and we have so much fun. What are the road trip games that you played, as a child?

One thing I remember begging to do while traveling was to listen to the radio. I could not understand why my parents wanted it to be quiet sometimes.

Mamaw and Papaw fixed me up for my seventh birthday. They bought me a cassette player with headphones! I was so happy and I still remember getting their package in the mail. That was the coolest gift! Thanks again, Mamaw and Papaw!

That little device traveled many miles with me. The hours passed by easier when I could listen to music and stories. My cassette player looked something like this one below. I also had a purple box that went everywhere with me, it held my cassettes. Now my phone or iPad has my music or podcasts just a click away.

My View-Master was with me most of the time. It was my pretend camera. I took thousands of pictures as we traveled. That was long before we had a camera with us all the time.

That is just a peek into my self-entertainment in the car, from years ago. What did you enjoy as a child? Thanks for reading a blast from my childhood. I appreciate you stopping by to visit with me.

Odie
