Remembering The Deer That Got Away

Hey Friends,

This is Odie reporting in for another Saturday post. My mind has been on deer hunting this week. I had a cool opportunity to participate in a special hunt this weekend. I plan to give you a full report next week!

I have been reminiscing about my past deer hunting excursions. I have had a wonderful time gaining experience and memories. However, my past hunts have not been successful.

My most eventful hunt was during the 2016 season. I was hunting with my Uncle Danny and Papaw Danny Morgan in Ohio. I first shared the story back then but is worth reposting today. I will never live this moment down! All I can do is smile and laugh.

This is my unforgettable hunting moment. Wednesday in the woods of Hillsboro, Ohio. We only had a couple hours to hunt Wednesday morning. I was determined that was the day I would take a deer down.

It was extremely still and foggy morning and things were quiet at first. I was facing a field waiting for a deer to show up. Uncle Danny was looking all around for deer. He looked over his shoulder to see a big doe coming to the feeder barrel.

I was trying to get turned quickly, cautiously and quietly so I could get a good shot. The deer was watching things closely but she was enjoying corn from the feeder. I am left handed but I could not get a left handed shot. My uncle suggested I try a right handed shot.

The deer was 23 yards away it was a perfect chance to get my prize. I took the shot and immediately the doe dropped, flipped started kicking. I thought I was finally successful! I was shocked and ready to celebrate. The next instant the doe jumped up and ran away unharmed. We were dumbfounded!

My Papaw and Uncle Danny checked things out and all they could find was lots of hair. No sign of an injured deer could be found. Their guess was the shot hit in a void spot between her back and lungs.

Uncle Danny said I gave her a hairstyle change. My title is now the "Deer Barber", Papaw Danny said she told all the other deer that corn at the Morgan's is dynamite. It knocked me down it had such a punch.

My only visible trophy for the day was a bag of deer hair.

When we got back to the house and were discussing everything that happened that morning. I mentioned my prayer earlier that day. "Lord please let a deer come out by the feeder. Let me get a shot and take it down". Well, God answered my prayer! I had just forgotten to ask for the deer to stay down forever. I did NOT hear the end of it all day.

Five years later my uncle still reminds me to be specific in my prayers! He has told me to pray the deer all the way to the wall. This time around I have been praying for a successful hunt!

Thanks for reading as I reminisced about my deer hunting adventure. I can not wait to share this new excursion with you. I hope you have a fantastic weekend.

Odie
