Using Your iPad As A Song Book

Revival Update

Revival at Foster Grove Holiness Church is going great. We are having good crowds and great fellowship from local churches. It has really been a blessing to us. God is moving and we are thankful. We are taking some pictures even though our official photographer is some where in the Caribbean. We will try to post them on Saturday.

Using Your iPad As A Song Book

Kelly Jo has been using her iPad as her song book almost since the first day she got it. It is so much easier than lugging around a big song book as she used to do or keeping up with a dozen books and never having the right one when you need it. The iPad has been perfect as a song book.

When people see her using it during altar they are often curious about it. Lots of folks have purchased an iPad for the purpose of using it as a song book but have not been able to figure out how to do it.

Kelly Jo wanted a way to somehow transfer all the songs from her big song book that she had compiled for many years. Many of those songs had been typed out and we had the files on our laptop. Many of the others were copies she made from other sources or were handwritten.

How could she get all of them onto her iPad and organized into one place?

Then some one told her about an app called My Music Stand. There is another app called Music Stand but that is different. The correct one she uses is My Music Stand.

Here it is in the app store.

And on the iPad

With My Music Stand you can transfer files from almost any of the word processing apps. Kelly Jo uses Pages for typing songs. Also if you have files on a laptop those can we transferred to Pages and then brought over to My Music Stand.

You can also take pictures of each page of your existing song book, or any song book for that matter and bring them into My Music Stand. The pictures can be of type written pages or hand written pages. Kelly Jo took literally hundreds of pictures of pages from her tediously compiled song book and in just a little while every one of those songs were on her iPad.

You can also take screen shots of lyrics and bring those pictures into My Music Stand. She does that when she looks up lyrics on the internet. She Googles the song, finds the correct lyrics, centers them on the page, takes a screenshot picture and then transfers the picture into My Music Stand.

My Music Stand alphabetizes the titles that you type in and places them in a handy sidebar scroll. It is very convenient. As with any app there is a slight learning curve but the more you mess with it the easier it is. She has found a few minor glitches in the app after a few years of use but she works around them.

You can view the files on a whole page.

Or you can view them on part of the page and leave the sidebar visible.

She often does that while singing one song at altar service and looking for another appropriate song.

Kelly Jo has also sorted several songs into categories and created set lists with the app. So if she wants songs about faith and healing she can see them at a glance.

The is a small cost in the app store for My Music Stand and for most of the good word processing apps like Pages and Docs To Go but the cost is insignificant compared to the ease and convenience of having your song book on your iPad.

It also works for sermons. Most of my sermons the last 20 years have been typed and stored on my computer so I have access to those files. But I have made handwritten notations all over the pages, scratching things out and adding things in. My Music Stand allows me to screenshot those sermons and bring them onto my iPad just like they are. I also took pictures of the dozens and dozens of handwritten sermons notes that I had in my notebooks.

Once I have them in My Music Stand I move them to PDF Expert. I like the flexibility that PDF Expert gives me to add in notes to the files, add and delete pages and to merge files. I also like the fact that I can "turn" pages in PDF Expert rather than scroll.

There may be better ways to get all of this accomplished but this is the way that we do it. Kelly Jo has so many people ask her about it that it seemed prudent to post this information here. One more thing, as of now this is an iPad only app. You will not find it for the iPhone or other devices at this time.

Have a great day.

Riverdale HIM Conference 2015

People ask us very often about Riverdale's HIM - Holiness in Ministry Conference. The most common question is "When are they going to start it back up?"

I have good news for you. After a hiatus of several years Riverdale Assembly is hosting HIM again this year. I know it is going to be exciting, educational and fun. We are not able to attend but we would love to be there. HIM falls on Allentown this year and we could not bring ourselves to miss Allentownespecially since we will miss it next year for City Reach.

The early bird registration date has past but it is definitely not too late to make plans to go. If you have ANYTHING to do with ministry at all there will be something for you there. I know you will enjoy the classes and services and learn a whole lot in the process. You can read the information about the conference below, including the history of HIM or you can go directly to their website HERE.

We love the Riverdale folks and we would love to be a part of HIM 2015. Maybe we will be able to go next time. If you go, you will not find any more friendly people in the world.

HIM Conference Introduction

HIM-Mass-Choir-2007In the early 1980’s, Jim and Darla Davis, music directors at the Riverdale Assembly of God in Riverdale California, were looking for ways to improve the music ministry. They soon realized after attending several music events that most of the conferences were hosted by mega churches in large metropolitan cities and by other denominations. They felt overwhelmed and out of place.
A dream was born and in 1991 the first Holiness In Music Conference was held using the Riverdale High School Auditorium. Thirty-five people from other churches signed up for the classes. In 1998 the name was changed to Holiness in Ministry Conference and the focus was expanded to include the whole ministry of the church encompassing youth, bus ministry, children’s ministry, puppets, Christian education, Sunday school, etc.
HIM-Mass-Choir-2007-03At the last HIM Conference in 2005, nearly two hundred registered and returned to their home churches with a renewed fire in their hearts to accomplish more for the Kingdom. Since then, the church has built a new 900 seat sanctuary and continued in ministry to the local community. The world has changed and the new HIM Conference will attempt to address these changes without losing sight of the fact that the Gospel is still the same!
Riverdale is a small western dairy town of 2500 people. Yet here in the middle of nowhere is a strong Pentecostal church of 450 with a large youth group, a bus ministry that averages over 130 kids and adults each week, a Christian school with 140 students, and a church that is still full on Wednesday nights. The goal of the HIM Conference is to open the local church ministries to you and say….you can do it too!
HIM-Mass-Choir-2007-02The highlight of the conference has always been the live recording of the conference choir. The HIM Mass Choir is composed of the Riverdale Sanctuary choir, Ambassador Youth Choir, and registrants from many other churches. The majority of these songs are original and have been recorded by many soloists, groups and choirs including Gold City, Sue Dodge, Lifeway and Prism Choral Club.
Many of the songs have been used and translated into native languages in Taiwan, Russia, Brazil, India, France and the Philippines. We hope to see you this year at the HIM Conference! We are looking forward to a great time of inspiration, fellowship and encouraging each other for the work of the Lord!

What About Lodging?

Nearest Motels are located in Lemoore, CA (Best WesternTravelodge & Motel 6 have special rates for HIM attendees, just ask. $65 – $75) Many of our church families will be opening their homes for out of town guests. Please call the church office if you are interested. Most homes will also provide transportation during the conference.

Can I Bring my RV/Trailer?

MASS Choir Participation?

Singing in the HIM Mass choir is an exciting finale to the week. Many participants do not have a choir in their local church so it is a great opportunity to join the 120+ voices in worship on Friday night. A “Live” recording of the choir, featuring new original material, will be available by late spring. The conference binder will include lyrics and chord charts to make it easy to take your favorite songs back to your home church.
NOTE: If you would like to sing with the Mass Choir, please contact the office to receive access to the parts tracks that will be available online. There will only be three rehearsals during the conference so you will need to be familiar with the material before you arrive.

Sightseeing?

Those who wish to take advantage of beautiful California (Riverdale doesn’t exactly fit this description!), will find the giant Redwoods and Yosemite two hours to the east and Pacific coast two hours to the west. San Francisco is also worth a visit, especially if you are using the San Francisco airport. A Great Weekend!

It has been a super great weekend in the south. This picture below is not the only reason it is good to be in the south but it is definitely part of the reason. This was the temperature Sunday morning in our home town. Wind chill was minus 11!

It has also been a great weekend because we were in some great services and we were blessed to see many good friends. Thursday we traveled a little over two hours from Waynesboro, Mississippi to Foster Grove Holiness Church in Mobile, Alabama.

Friday we drove about 40 minutes south to Irvington, Alabama to be in service with Pastor Rusty Johnson and his folks at Lighthouse of Hope. They were in the last day of their Anniversary Campmeeting. We were blessed to hear some great preaching and to visit with a lot of friends.

Including our super great friends from Texarkana Devin and Darah.

Saturday I crammed as much of nothing as I could into one little ol' day while the girls finished up shopping and preparation for Odie's vacation this week. I did try to make sure I was ready to preach Sunday but not much more than that.

When the girls came home in the evening I took Kelly Jo out for dinner and a stroll through Dirt Cheap. We made it through the store without buying a thing and that is unusual for us at Dirt Cheap.

Sunday night we started revival at Foster Grove Holiness Church. This is our first time preaching here at Foster Grove but we have known Pastor Jimmie McDuffie and most of his folks for many years. We have been seeing them at Allentown March Meeting for over 25 years and we have preached several revivals in this area.

Knowing all the folks made us feel right at home and we really enjoyed the service. Folks responded good in the altar and God blessed and helped. We are looking forward to more good services this week.

Bro. and Sis. McDuffie

Sunday morning we were at the Mobile Airport by 9:00 and Odie was in the air by 11:00.

As you can see above, Odie is traveling with her power scooter. This is the first time she has taken it by airplane. It disassembles into several easy to carry pieces and Kelly Jo attached very detailed instructions with pictures but Odie said they did not take it a part for the ride with the baggage.

She made her connection just fine and landed in Tampa, Florida with no problems at all. She met up with Kaylene from Kansas and then retrieved her luggage and wheel chair. They called the shuttle, made it to the hotel close by and my Dad and Mom were waiting on them there.

She sent the pictures and text below so I am including them in post.

Take it away, Odie!

Well hello friends!  I am writing this from the air. I am almost to Tampa. My flight from Mobile, Alabama to Charlotte, North Carolina went very smooth. I will check in again from Tampa this evening.

I saved my chocolate cover pretzel from Litte Rock Assembly for vacation. As soon as the wheels left Mobile I took a bite. It was soooo good.

Mobile, Alabama to Charlotte, North Carolina

Headed to Tampa

Charlotte, North Carolina to Tampa Florida

I have arrived safely in Tampa and met up with Kaylene Stephens. My flight was very smooth. During the landing my ears hurt me very badly. They were clogged for hours afterward.

Kaylene and I are thankful for all the prayers. We both arrived at our destination in one piece. All of our luggage arrived with us. As Dad told you, this is my first flying trip with my power scooter. I was worried it would not make it to Tampa. It did arrive in good shape and I am thankful it made the trip just fine.

My Mamaw and Papaw Boggs are spending some time in St. Cloud, Florida this month and they drove over to see me Sunday night. We had a wonderful visit with them. I really enjoyed getting to see my grandparents and I appreciate them sacrificing the whole afternoon and evening to drive to see me. It was a special treat for me and was so kind of them.

They were at our hotel waiting on us when we got there.

We quickly checked into the room and settled in. Then we ate dinner at the hotel restaurant. I forgot to get a picture of my flat bread sandwich. It was delicious. I did get a picture of my salad.

Kaylene Stephens, my travel partner for the week.

After a long day of traveling I was more than ready to plop down in this!

Today we plan to take a shuttle to the cruise port and 11:00 and then we will be on our way. You probably will not hear from me directly until I return. Dad will probably cover my post on Saturday and maybe I will post some pictures from the cruise during the next week.

View Out The Window February 15, 2015

As Odie mentioned yesterday we are now parked at Foster Grove Holiness Church in Mobile, Alabama.

Odie is supposed to fly to Tampa today and we are supposed to begin revival here tonight. This is our first time at Foster Grove so this is a new view for us.

We are looking forward to a great week and I know that Odie is looking forward to a wonderful week at sea listening to Gospel music. I hope you have a great Sunday.

Almost Time To Go

Hey Friends!  It is Saturday again so this is Odie writing to you again. I hope you had a spectacular week. We definitely enjoy our time this week at Little Rock Assembly in Waynesboro, Mississippi. It was great to be with Pastor Jason Merritt and his congregation again.

Now the BoggsMobile has landed in Mobile, Alabama. We parked Thursday afternoon at Foster Grove Holiness Church where Dad and Mom will be in revival beginning Sunday night. If you are in the area come visit my parents and Pastor Jimmie McDuffie this week. I know they will be glad to have you.

We are very, very glad to be back in the land of reliable cell phone signal! The last two weeks we have had virtually no signal. We could occasionally send or receive a text message if we held our phone in the air and wore our tinfoil hat. It was so nice to look at my phone yesterday and see full LTE signal.

I mentioned that my parents will be here in revival next week but I will be leaving for a week. Tomorrow morning I am flying to Tampa, Florida. Once in Tampa I am meeting my friend Kaylene Stephens.

Monday through Saturday morning we will be on a Gospel singing cruise on the Carnival Paradise. We will sail Monday through Friday and we will be porting at Grand Cayman Islands and Cozumel, Mexico Wednesday and Thursday.

I am anticipating 6 relaxing days filled with fun and food. I am thrilled to be going on the Singing At Sea. You can find pics of my past Singing At Sea cruise HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE .

You can probably tell I am excited about my vacation and hearing all of the Gospel singing on the ship. HERE is the line up of Southern Gospel group that will be performing during our times at sea.

For more info on Templeton Tours or Singing At Sea visit this Link.

I am super pumped and excited that my vacation is almost here. Kaylene and I started planning this trip 383 days out. We have had a constant count down going the entire time!  It has already been a blast planning this with her.

Here is a picture I text Kaylene early in our count down.

This is the picture I sent her Thursday.

Now my boarding pass is In hand and my suitcase is packed!!  I am ready for the fun to begin!

Please keep us in your prayers this week. We are both flying to Florida Sunday. Then we will be at sea Monday through Saturday. Our return flights are scheduled for next Saturday afternoon.

I will talk to you again when I return to land. I promise lots of pictures soon.

My View of Evangelism

When I posted yesterday I wrote the following about evangelizing.

I am always thrilled and amazed that Pastors keep calling and asking us into their churches to minister to their people. What an awesome privilege to preach the Word of God. It is also a privilege and honor to be entrusted with the responsibility of ministering in another man's pulpit.

That paragraph set me to thinking. We really do love what we do. I love to preach the Word of God. We love to sing. We love to minister the love of God to people exactly where they are with the message of the Gospel. I love to share good news with folks that are constantly bombarded with bad news.

They say if you love what you do then you never really work a day in your life. I do not know who "they" are and "they" might have been making a slight exaggeration but I get the point.

I spent quite a few years in secular employment.

I have worked in various forms of construction both commercial and residential.

I have worked in two different GM factories for a total of 8 years. In one GM factory I worked the majority of the time as a job setter and operator on high speed punch presses.

In the second GM factory I worked on various assembly lines where we made Chevy Blazers, GMC Envoys and Oldsmobile Bravadas. Most of my years there were spent in tire and wheel, final assembly and the interior trim department.

I also worked at another small factory, tried my had at selling insurance (Became totally convinced I am NOT a salesman), as a trim carpenter and one of my favorite jobs but also lowest paying jobs was working at Kmart.

Through most of those years I also worked on the side doing residential electric work and also other construction.

My high school job was in the kitchen of a nursing home. The first few months of married life I was a laborer for a carpet layer and an electrical contractor before I was hired at GM.

I mostly enjoyed going to work. I was thankful for every day I had a place to go and do something that somebody felt was worth paying me to do. We have had some thin times when jobs were hard to find and I was especially thankful to be working no matter how low the pay was.

Many of those years I worked a lot of hours each week. Most of the time I was working two jobs or working one job and doing side work as well. For one thing, we needed the money to pay the bills and keep our family afloat. In addition to that, it was always satisfying to feel tired at the end of a long day or at the end of an 80 hour week and know that I had accomplished something useful AND I was providing for my family too.

But in the end, it was just work. These were just jobs. They provided means for us to live and to give. I was thankful to God for every day I could work. Kelly Jo and I knelt down at the couch many times early in the morning and thanked God for a job to go to while asking him to help me with specific challenges I was facing on the job at the time. But they were just jobs, a means to an end.

When the call came from Wichita asking me to leave GM and Pastor a church I thought it over about two minutes. In some ways it was the hardest decision I had ever made but I KNEW I must go. I would not have went without the Lord's direction but I sensed His direction from that first moment.

I gave that wonderful little church my very best. I may not have been a great Pastor, I will leave that determination to somebody else, but I was the very best Pastor I could be. I loved it and lived it from day one.

When the door opened for us to enter evangelism nearly four years later in January 2003, we gave that all we had too. For over twelve years we have had the awesome privilege to preach revivals all over the USA and in other countries. Pastors have invited us to their churches and allowed us the opportunity to sing and preach the everlasting Gospel to their people. We count that an amazing honor.

God has blessed us to work with some of the best men in the world. We have preached for some of the best Pastors in the world and worked right along side awesome Missionaries and tremendous Evangelists. God has done our family a great kindness by surrounding us with great Godly men.

We have watched God save people right out of their sin, sanctify, fill with the Holy Ghost, heal and encourage. We have witnessed as He changed lives, restored marriages, renewed relationships, brought children back home and revitalized congregations.

The Lord has allowed us to be a part in the lives of many wonderful saints of God. We have married them, dedicated their babies and walked beside them as they laid their loved ones in the ground. We have cried with them at the hospital, prayed them through at the jail house and shouted the victory with them in the church house.

Wow! What a marvelous, wonderful, phenomenal vocation!

Is evangelism work? Is what we do tiring? Is it hard?

Physically, these twelve plus years have been the hardest in my life. But you know what "they" say. No, not "they", I say, IF you love what you do then you never really work a day in your life.

We really love what God has given us to do that much. May He help us to do it faithfully and to do it well.

Next week I may write a post about my vision and approach to evangelism. Have a great weekend.
