Throwback Thursday Visiting 9/11 Museum In 2014

Hey Friends,

Today is 9/11/25. If you were born on 9/11/01, you are reflecting on where you were when the news broke. We were pastoring in Wichita, Kansas, on that fateful day.

My Mamaw called Dad and told him the news. We spent most of the day gathered around the radio, listening to the news reports! Our hearts were broken and full of questions!

Life instantly became before 9/11 and after 9/11. A few moments in history can change a nation!

Today, for Throwback Thursday, here is a blog post that Dad wrote after our first visit to the 9/11 museum.

I hope you enjoy. I will let Dad finish out this post. Dad posted this on August 4th, 2014.

“Sunday was a great day. We had two great church services and a super meal that we will not forget any time soon. We have lots of pictures from the day that we will post later.

Saturday we were ready for a break. We did as much of nothing as we could fit into one day. It was refreshing.

Friday was a different story. We started Friday by heading back to the train and subway.

We were on our way to the 9/11 Museum. We took the hotel shuttle to the train and the train to Penn Station in New York. We waded through Penn Station and found the platform for the E train. We rode the E train to the end of the line and came up to street level less than 1/2 mile from the Museum.

Walking up to the 9/11 Memorial was amazing. There is a beautiful park built around the footprint of the old North and South Towers. Within the footprint where each tower stood is a reflecting pool. Each is about an acre in size.

Although there were thousands of people there it was still a tranquil place.

Around the edges of the pool the names of the people that died are engraved.

You enter the museum building above ground but most of the museum is below the reflecting pools.

After entering you descend several floors down a long wide ramp. You see glimpses of the displays from the edges and from and overlook as you go down.

This is the last column removed from the site during demolition. It displayed next to the Slurry Wall.

When it became apparent that this would be the last column removed it became a memorial to those that died especially among the first responders.

Last column during demolition.

These are the survivor stairs. They were on the outside of the towers leading from the plaza level down to the street. Many hundreds of survivors escaped via these stairs on 9/11. The stairs survived the collapse of the towers pretty much intact. The chips and damage occurred during the demolition phase. They were preserved and placed in a prominent place in the museum.

These are remnants of the original footprint of the towers. These box columns made up the external structure of the towers and went all the way down to bedrock.

They cut these off at foundation level. You can walk the entire perimeter of the North Tower foundation. The South Tower foundation is not entirely visible because the subway still runs through it although there is no longer a stop there.

You can see how they were secured onto steal plates and thick concrete bases atop the bedrock of Manhattan.

They are approximately 2' by 2 1/2'.

FDNY Ladder truck #3 responded and parked next to the North Tower. It was destoyed when the tower collapsed and all the 11 responding members of Ladder Company #3 were inside the North Tower and were killed when it collapsed at 10:28 AM.

This is one of two pieces they have displayed called impact steal. It is over 20 feet long and was originally part of the outer structure between the 93rd and 96th floors on the north side of the North Tower. Hijacked flight 11 tore a gash from the 93rd through the 99th floor. It hit directly at the top of this impact steal. This steal was bent and torn from the impact of the plane.

They have also displayed a 35 foot section that was torn from this one in another part of the museum.

There was yet another huge section of steal on display that was bent double by the weight of the building crashing down.

Contrast that with the window below.

There were over 40,000 windows in the twin towers. The window above was in the 82nd floor of the South Tower. When that tower came down a huge section of the facade came down so hard that the steal penetrated the street several feet. In that section of the facade this window was found unbroken. Unbelievable.

This is a 20' section of the 360' antenna that was on top of the North Tower.

This is an original section of the huge trench wall built around the World Trade Center site when construction began in the 1960's. It is called the Slurry Wall. It was designed and installed to keep the water from the Hudson River out. Although damaged when the buildings collapsed, it held. It has since been reinforced.

This is a valve used to allow water through the Slurry Wall from the Hudson River to assist in the AC. It is 5 or 6 feet tall.

After the tour we milled around the plaza between the footprint where the two towers once stood and soaked it all in. It was an amazing and surreal experience. I highly recommend seeing the museum and the memorial.

You can find out much more about the 9/11 Memorial and Museum by downloading a free app. Search for 9/11 Museum Audio Guide in the app store. It is designed to guide you as you move through the museum and we used it Friday.

But you do not have to be there to listen to the descriptions and commentary. If you like to read the signs or listen to the tour guide you will love this app.

On our way back to the subway we stopped for Chinese. Wow! It was good!

After we navigated the subway, Penn Station, train station and taxi we made it back to the hotel.

Happy Birthday America

 Hey Friends,

Thanks for stopping by for a visit today! Have you read the two special posts that we have shared this week?

Sunday was a very special post commemorating my parents' 40th wedding anniversary. Yesterday, Thursday, was my mom's birthday.

Thank you to everyone who sent her birthday text, emails, phone calls and videos. Mom really appreciated all of them! She had a great birthday!

The birthdays continue! Today is America's birthday! Happy birthday America! Happy Fourth of July to the rest of you!

Our country was founded 249 years ago today. Our independence from Great Britain was declared on July 4th 1776!

Thank God for our  forefathers who had a vision to create a country. Thank you to each and everyone of them who fought and or died so that we could enjoy the freedoms that we know is the norm today. We are blessed abundantly as Americans!

I am so thankful to be an American. I pray that God continues to bless our great nation, and have mercy upon us! We are in need of God more now than! God, please give our nation revival!

It has been a while since I shared this! Let's listen to the Isaacs sing Star-Spangled Banner.

I will never forget the first time we heard him do it live. It was in a small theater in Louisiana! We were blown away then by their incredible rendition of our national anthem. their version never gets old! This particular video is a trip down memory lane.

Thanks for reading! I will be back tomorrow.

Sunday Sanity 2/16/25

 Hey Friends,

Thanks for joining us on Sunday! Welcome if you are new to Boggs Blogs! My regular readers know that we have shared a Sunday Sanity here most Sundays for several years.

Sanity was something my Dad started, and I have carried on. A while back, I found a page where Dad had saved some sanity possibilities. I have not researched them all yet to see if he has used any of them in the past. I did search for the one that I'm using today. I did not see it posted here.

I thought this was a good nugget to leave you with for today.

I hope you have a great Sunday! Thanks for reading!

Happy 80th Birthday Mamaw

Hey Friends,

This is Odie reporting in for another Saturday post. Thank you for joining me. It is great to be with you for a few moments. I hope you are well!

There is an extra special event happening in our Boggs family this week. Do you know what happened in history on Sunday, July 30th, 1944? According to Wikipedia, here are the events that happened 80 years ago.

Sunday, June 30th 1944
  • The Narva July Offensive ended in Soviet victory.
  • The Battle of Sansapor began when U.S. forces made amphibious landings around Sansapor, Dutch New Guinea.
  • During the Battle of Normandy the British Army began Operation Bluecoat with the goal of capturing Vire and Mont Pinçon.
  • German submarine U-250 was depth charged and sunk in the Gulf of Finland by the Soviet submarine chaser M-103.
  • Died: Lee Powell, 36, American actor

They missed the biggest event that day in history. It should be in all history books. An exceptional baby entered the world. Her birth sure changed my life. I would not be here without her!

Godfrey and Bessie Isaacs lived in a log cabin in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. They had been married for 25 years at this point. God had already blessed them with many children. On that day in history, their last baby girl, Martha Emma Isaacs, joined the family. She was number 16 in the line-up of children. A couple of years later, a baby brother completed their family of 17 children.

Martha grew up in Kentucky. She quickly learned to work alongside her parents on the farm. I am sure she could do whatever task was needed. The Martha I know has never been one to shy away from work.

In the 1960s, she left home to move to Ohio. There, she met and married the love of her life, Eugene Boggs. When they married, he was a Sailor in the Navy, but they made life work!

Martha Emma Boggs has been her name for 61 of her 80 years on earth. With God's help and strength, she has weathered many storms of life. Her path has had many twists and turns, but she still stands today! Thank God for grace and provision!

Martha's family has now grown to include 4 children, spouses, 7 grandchildren, spouses and 6  great grandchildren. She is our family queen!

For the last 38 of her 80 years, her grandest title has been Mamaw! She is my Mamaw, and I think she is the World's Best Mamaw! I am proud to tell the world about my Mamaw! Everyone who knows her loves her!

When I think of Mamaw, I think of a classy lady who is Godly, beautiful, loving, caring, kind, and compassionate. She has a heart of gold and is always ready to help or give to others when needed. My Mamaw is the true definition of a prayer warrior!

Our family is blessed beyond measure to have Mamaw! God allowed us to have a jewel as our very own. She is an incredible Wife, Mother, Mamaw, Nana Great, Sister, Aunt, Friend and all around great human! Martha Boggs is a gift of God to our family!

July 30th 2024 marks the 80th birthday of Martha Boggs! Today, we are spending some time with Mamaw's family and friends, celebrating her milestone birthday.

Mamaw, I love you more than I can say with words or actions! I admire and appreciate you so much! Thank you for being there for me! I  hope you feel extraodanarly love and appreciated today!

July has been a busy birthday month for lots of our family and friends! We started the month with my Mom's birthday on the 3rd, and they kept rolling from there. Happy birthday to all those born during July!

Thanks for reading. See you next time.

Memorial Day 2024

Hey Friends,

This is Odie reporting from my Ohio beach cottage. I hope you are doing well. Thanks for stopping by to visit with me on this busy holiday weekend.

When I think of Memorial Day, this song repeats in my head. I had to share it with you today. Please listen to More Than A Name On A Wall at least once.

I want to remember the reason we have a holiday to celebrate this weekend. It is a time we remember our loved ones who have finished their lives ahead of us.

Dad shared about our recent visit to the local cemetery on Thursday. In this post about my sweet sister, you can see why we visit Miami Cemetery every May.

Our family and friends may be gone from this life, but definitely not forgotten. Heaven grows sweeter every day! I look forward to reuniting and meeting many friends and family members soon.

Memorial Day was set aside to honor our soldiers who gave their all for America. I honor those special souls who sacrificed all for the freedoms I hold dear today!

Twenty years ago, we visited Washington, D.C., and saw several monuments in our Nation's capital. It was a week that this American history lover will never forget.

Our visit to Arlington National Cemetary left a permanent impression on my mind and heart. I can not describe the feeling of watching the guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We watched the changing of the guard a few times. It was a special moment; I am so glad I witnessed it in person.

That visit to D.C. deepened my sincere appreciation for the sacrifice and dedication of many great people. We all benefit from the gift of countless men and women. It hurts me to think about the pain and suffering of the soldiers and their families.

Their names are more than names on a wall or plaque. They were real people who gave their lives for our country. Thank you. feels very hollow, but I mean the words with all my heart! I remember them extra this weekend!

See you next time.

5 Years And Still Thankful

Hey Friends,

This is Odie reporting in from my Ohio Beach Cottage. I am happy to be home for a quick visit. We have a busy weekend and week on the books. Check back in the coming days to see our fun with family and friends.

June 1st was the 5th anniversary since I officially moved into my Beach Cottage. Here is a picture from that first night.

It does not feel like it has not been that long. I am so grateful for the beautiful place to call my home! In the last 5 years, so much has happened in the world and in my life. It has been a major blessing to have my own safe place!

The entire home is a series of miracles! I do not want to forget God’s provision! The love and support from my family and friends turned a dream into a reality. My heart still overflows with gratitude!

Many of you reading this post played a role in helping us build my home. Thank you one more time from the bottom of my heart. I thank God for you! I still pray for God to bless you abundantly!

This week marked another 5th house anniversary for me. August 17th, 2018. We were joined by many of the incredible people that help us build my home for house tours and dedication. It was a privilege to show off my finished miracle. We had a sweet dedication on my front porch!

That evening was fantastic. We had friends from near and far come to celebrate with us. Lots of prayers, money, blood, sweat, tears and work brought us to that moment. It was an extraordinary day of memories that still warms my heart!

I encourage you to read this archived blog post here. Dad summed up the wonderful dedication day in an excellent way. Below is just a sampling of photos from that night that are special to me.

I will never forget the love I experienced that day! I am blessed beyond measure! I just wanted to pause for a moment to thank God for His unspeakable gift of my beautiful home!

Thank you for joining me as I stroll down memory lane. Here is a small tour of the front portion of my home. This was recorded during our 2020 online covid revival.

See you next week.
